Partnership and sponsorship actions

Invitation of professors and research scientists

Partnership actions seek to initiate and enhance collaborative research projects between the laboratories at ESPCI ParisTech and the technical teams at Michelin. The Chair sponsors the short-term appointment of internationally renowned professors and scientists in the field of Materials Science. The Chair also provides for funding for postdoctoral fellows attracted to the unique sientific and technological challenges provided by industry. These actions constitute a springboard for significant ongoing interactions between ESPCI ParisTech and Michelin.

Diffusion of new knowledge

The Chair organizes and conducts joint seminars and workshops with international experts to review the state of the art of current fundamental knowledge and of advanced research in topics related to the scientific expertise of the Chair. In December 2013, the Second International Workshop between ESPCI ParisTech and Michelin will take place at ESPCI on the topic “Flow, Fracture, Interfaces in Soft Heterogeneous Materials”. This workshop is a follow-up of the 2010 meeting which had brought 150 scientists and engineers together for two days of lectures and discussions.

Frédéric Fontaine Scholarships

As part of its sponsorship actions, the Chair founded the Frédéric Fontaine scholarships program to support students from ESPCI ParisTech enrolled in a Master program during their 4th year at the School. The Chair awards up to 12 grants per year on rigourous criteria such as excellence in academic achievements and the relevance of the student’s career plans with respect to the fields of expertise of the Chair.

The Frederic Fontaine laureates continue to benefit from various initiatives all over the preparation of their PhD thesis. For instance, the Chair can, partially or totally, sponsor individual projects that contribute to the personal and professional development of the laureates. These actions are in accordance with the objectives of the Chair and distinct from those usually conducted by laboratories. Qualified professionals from Michelin can also assist the laureates with the preparation of job interviews and provide them support during the valorisation of their thesis.

Some grants can also be awarded to highly motivated foreign students who pursue their education at ESPCI ParisTech. Since the academic year 2009, four grants have been awarded. In September 2013, two new laureates will enroll in ESPCI with the financial support of the Michelin Chair.

Other sponsorship actions

The Michelin company offers ESPCI ParisTech students the unique opportunity to do an internship in an industry setting within one of its R&D teams worldwide, inluding in the US and Japan.
